ต้นกำเนิดของมาสคอตตัวแรกนั้น จากการค้นหาข้อมูลของถามตอบรอบโลกไม่พบหลักฐานแน่ชัดว่าใครเป็นต้นคิดหรือ ใครเป็นคนแรกที่นำมาใช้ มีเพียงการอ้างอิงว่าครั้งแรกที่มีการปรากฏตัวของเจ้าตัวมาสคอต คือในช่วงปลายค.ศ.1800 ในการแข่งขันกีฬาระดับโรงเรียนและมหาวิทยาลัย จากนั้นไม่นานทีมกีฬาหลายๆชนิด จึงนำสัญลักษณ์นำโชคมาปักไว้บนชุดแข่งขันด้วย


ในปี 1972 ได้มีการเปิดตัวมาสคอต ในกีฬาโอลิมปิกเกมส์อย่างเป็นทางการครั้งแรกที่มิวนิค ประเทศเยอรมนี จากนั้นมา เจ้าตัวตุ๊กตารูปสัตว์ มนุษย์ หรือสิ่งของ ก็ได้กลายเป็นของที่ระลึกที่ได้รับความนิยมเป็นอย่างสูงในการแข่งขันกีฬา โอลิมปิกและพาราลิมปิกเกมส์จนถึงปัจจุบัน


นิสัยของเจ้ามาสคอตนั้น ทุกตัวจะมีอารมณ์ขันและจิตใจดี พวกมันจะคอยต้อนรับขับสู้นักกีฬาและแขกทั่วโลกที่มาร่วมแข่งขันกีฬา เรียกเสียงหัวเราะจากเด็กๆรวมทั้งสร้างบรรยากาศที่ดีให้กับกองเชียร์


ในส่วนของคำว่า "Mascot" เป็นที่รู้จักกันในปี ค.ศ.1880 เมื่อนักแต่งเพลงชาวฝรั่งเศส Edmond Audran ได้เขียนละครตลกมีชื่อว่า "La Mascotte" แต่ด้วยที่ชื่อค่อนข้างยาว ชาวฝรั่งเศสบางส่วนจึงเรียกให้สั้นและกระชับในศัพท์แสลงว่า “masco” ซึ่งมีความหมายว่า แม่มด นอกจากนี้บางส่วนเรียกว่า mascoto ที่แปลว่าคาถา


ละครตลก "La Mascotte" ได้รับความนิยมเป็นอย่างสูง แต่ในภาษาอังกฤษเรียกละครดังกล่าวว่า "The Mascot" ที่หมายถึงสัตว์ คนหรือสิ่งของนำโชค
